Practically every other Git command I run in the terminal is git status, or a
flavor of it; followed by git log --oneline -2 or git diff if I am at a
loss. So I commit only what I want (well, most of the time, anyway).
It takes a while to build a habit, but I learnt early on that sticking to good practices is worth it, whether it’s regarding code or everyday life. It’s muscle memory that helps you do things the right way in the end – especially when things tend to get hectic, when you have little time to react, and a spur-of-the-moment decision makes you regret things half a second later.
I learnt to stick to good habits from my driving sensei: to stop cutting corners while driving, I stopped cutting corners while biking too, and never went back. It’s the same discipline that has been keeping me out of trouble when it comes to version control. Most of the time, anyway.
