The following information applies to my profiles on GitHub (operated by GitHub, Inc., US, and GitHub B.V., Netherlands; "GitHub"), LinkedIn (operated by LinkedIn Ireland Unlimited Company, "LinkedIn"), Medium (operated by A Medium Corporation, US; "Medium"), and YouTube (operated by Google Ireland Limited and Google LLC, US; jointly "YouTube"/"Google"). GitHub is described separately because I do not use its audience analytics, so the section on joint controllership below does not apply to it.
GitHub
I use GitHub to take part in the community and to point to my website and professional profiles. If you interact with me on GitHub, I process the information that is visible to me only to reply to you. Contributions in other people's repositories (e.g. issues) may be publicly visible there. The repository owners and GitHub are responsible for the processing in those repositories, not me. This data stays on GitHub until you, I, or GitHub delete it; I do not store it outside the platform. GitHub is responsible for running the platform and for everything related to it (e.g. account management, analytics, security, cookies, transfers to third countries). For details, see GitHub's privacy statement.
LinkedIn, Medium, and YouTube
Possible joint controllership (Art. 26 GDPR)
To the extent that LinkedIn, Medium, and YouTube provide me with aggregated analytics about my posts, videos, or stories (e.g. reach or the demographic makeup of viewers) and I use this function, I indirectly influence the underlying data processing. For this reason, I may be a joint controller together with the respective platform under Art. 26 GDPR (see CJEU, judgment in "Wirtschaftsakademie Schleswig-Holstein", C-210/16, on Facebook fan pages). Whether and to what extent this also applies to personal profiles and channels is not clearly settled in law. LinkedIn offers an agreement on joint controllership (the "Page Insights Joint Controller Addendum") only for LinkedIn company pages; Medium and YouTube currently do not provide such an agreement for my use. I receive this information only in aggregated form and have no access to the platforms' underlying processing. Regardless of this, you can exercise your rights under Art. 26(3) GDPR with me as well as with the respective platform.
What data I process
I process the data you give me or make visible to me through the platform (e.g. profile information, comments, messages), or that the platform provides to me in aggregated form. This data stays on the respective platform until you, I, or the platform delete it, apart from email notifications from LinkedIn (see below).
Purposes of processing
I use this data only to communicate, to present my content, and to evaluate the reach of my posts. If you comment on my posts or send me messages, I process this information only to respond to your comment or request.
Email notifications
LinkedIn may notify me by email when you contact me, for example through a direct message, a connection request, or a mention. These notifications can include your name and an excerpt of your message or comment. I receive them in my business mailbox and process them only to reply to you. For how my email provider processes them, see the section "Hosting and Access Data" in my privacy policy; for retention periods, deletion, and the applicable legal bases, see the section "Email Contact".
Responsibility of the platforms
For all other data processing (e.g. tracking, cookies, profiling, technical analytics, advertising systems), the respective platform alone is responsible. See the platform's privacy notices for details.
Data transfers to third countries
The platforms may transfer data to third countries; further information can be found in their privacy notices.
For all platforms
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in communication, community participation, and public relations).
Your rights
You have the following rights: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and data portability. For data processed by the platform, please contact the platform directly. For data for which I am (jointly) responsible, you may also contact me; I will forward your request to the platform if necessary.
Your right to object (legitimate interests)
If I am processing your data based on my legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), you have the right to object to that processing at any time, for reasons related to your particular situation (Art. 21(1) GDPR). If you do, I will stop that processing unless I can show compelling, legitimate grounds that override your interests.
Right to lodge a complaint
You have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority:
Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht (BayLDA)
Promenade 18, 91522 Ansbach

Changes to this privacy notice
I update this notice if legal requirements or the processing on my social media profiles change. The current version is always available on this page.
